French designer Pauline Esparon has presented the outcome of her Villa Swagatam residency at Nilufar Gallery during Milan Design Week 2026, as part of the collective exhibition La Casa Magica.
Created in collaboration with Vastrakala, Daybed Djigdjig explores the expressive potential of raw jute fibre through nearly 1,500 hours of exceptional embroidery. Developed during Pauline Esparon’s residency in Chennai, the work transforms a material often associated with utility into an object of refinement, texture and luminous beauty.
Beyond the final object, the project reflects the spirit of Villa Swagatam: fostering meaningful encounters between artists, artisans and traditions through time, exchange and shared experimentation. Presented in Milan for the first time on the occasion of Salone, Daybed Djigdjig stands as a remarkable dialogue between contemporary design and Indian embroidery savoir-faire.
This is the third time Vastrakala, Lesage Intérieurs and Villa Swagatam collaborate together. After a first experimentation with Victoire de Brantes which result was unveiled at Villa Noailles, and a second one with Antonin Mongin whose piece was a highlight of the exhibition “Textile Matters” in Paris, it is a great pleasure to see this unique work, produced in dialogue with Indian master artisans, getting international recognition.
